Stephens Hall Undergoes Major Renovation

If you’ve passed by the middle of campus since last February, you’ve seen a looming white puffy structure—the shrink-wrapped Stephens Hall. The home of the Academic Senate and a number of other academic units, the John Galen Howard-designed building was completed in 1923 and is one of the campus’ oldest buildings.

The current project is to refurbish the entire exterior of the building, which is constructed of reinforced concrete and has suffered years of damage from the elements. Although the building is open during construction, the noise and disruption have largely moved the Senate staff back to remote operations. With the generosity of our colleagues in the School of Information, most spring 2022 committee meetings were held in South Hall, and they’ll be there again during the fall semester.

We look forward to resuming activity in our lovely refurbished building by the end of 2022.
